IKIGAI is a light displacement sailing yacht built to the plans of renowned yacht builders Judel & Vrolijk.
THE ARISING OF IKIGAI
A PREVIOUS LIFE
It was originally built in Spain in 2002 at JFA Shipyard. It has been named ATALANTA and SEJAA in pervious lives, by previous owners. The monohull yacht has been outfitted with a carbon mast and self-furling carbon boom. Sailing Ikigai is an absolute joy: sensational to helm, she is simply fantastic upwind.
A COMPLETE REBUILD
The yacht was recently refitted and refurbished at Vitters Zwartsluis in what was effectively a complete rebuild. The spacious, modern and welcoming interior is fashioned from clear varnished teak. The large master cabin and two guest cabins are situated forward. Amidships are the spacious saloon and dining room. Behind the companionway you will find, to port, the brand new high-tech navigation station, the chart table and the crew cabin; and to starboard, the galley and crew mess. The transom opens to give access to the garage where the tender is stored. Sailing Ikigai is an absolute joy: sensational to helm, she is simply fantastic upwind.
MEANING OF IKIGAI
Ikigai is a familiar concept to the Japanese, epitomised by the story of the people of Okinawa. People on the island of Okinawa live longer than anywhere else on Earth. Initially scientists put this down to the eating habits of the islanders, yet these hardly differ from those on the mainland. Author and explorer, Dan Buettner, claims Ikigai is the real reason people live longer on Okinawa. He believes that because people on the island never retire, they therefore continue to value life, and remain valued by society, into their old age. Literally translated, ikigai means value(iki) life(gai). More freely translated, it means ‘reason to get up’: the things you live for, the things that make life worth living.
